Emma sighed. Quietly. She sat back and let them all talk. There was nothing to add, or even anything to say at all. She knew she was listless, and didn’t know how she’d gotten here. But here she was. After 12 years with Type 1 diabetes, other things had complicated her health… it had all become too much. Nothing really mattered, and anyway, she was pretty much nonexistent to everyone else. Still, she felt like she was disappearing, hour by hour, day by day. If only it weren’t for the pain… pain in her back, her knees, her neck. What caused it, and what could be done? It seemed that her doctors didn’t really hear her anymore. Glazing over, they refilled her prescriptions, ignoring her pleas for help. No surprise…she was invisible after all. If only she could defend herself somehow against these autoimmune conditions.

A Type 1 diabetic since she was 5, Emma had long ago adapted to the 5-10 finger sticks every day, the extreme highs and lows in blood sugar surrounding her periods, or when she was upset, or during and after exercise, or when she was sick… Ok, most of the time.
She’d been on an insulin pump since she was 12, and a continuous glucose monitor soon thereafter. But with all the technology, all the clinics and seminars she had attended with her parents, and all the family did to work together to help her maintain blood sugar control, it continued to spike and tank. This was the backdrop of her life.
Stress, Inflammation, Sickness
They say to reduce your stress. Please. How do you reduce your stress when your own body is keeping you in constant upheaval? Instead of the steady blood sugar control the technology promised, it was a constant struggle with a whole new set of problems added on.
Then, after puberty, and in the years that followed, pain began to take over. First in her back, then her neck, then her shoulders… then her knees and ankles. Eventually, she was referred to a pain doctor to try to manage it all. Little did she know what autoimmune fallout was spreading through her body and she needed to defend herself against autoimmune conditions, like this one.

It all felt so futile. Every day, the same thing. Waking up in the morning to soak her toes before school because of chronic infections under her nails. Followed by applying alcohol and antibiotic. Then blood sugars, and treating highs or lows. And then the American Diabetic Association’s diet. Eggs, toast, fruit, etc. She felt like she was in a prison of suffocating routine and sameness. All of it before school. But NONE of it was helping.
She didn’t feel good after she ate these meals, but this so called “balanced” diet was required. So she endured.
Add to that the unpredictable menstrual periods, the never ending pain that exhausted her every single day. Then the almost daily migraines that developed after her 15th birthday. And the absences from school because of hospitalizations, migraines, flu and other infections. It seemed she was either out of school sick, or trying to catch up on a mountain of makeup work that wore her down until she was sick again.
Constant. Never ending. Futile. Hopelessness.

At 17, Emma was just worn out. She’d given it all she had to give all her life, and she had nothing left. She had no idea that she needed to get help defending herself against autoimmune conditions. Her only solace was losing herself in her phone… social media and streaming.
It seemed that following all the rules hadn’t gotten her anywhere. Her diabetes seemed to be getting worse, not better. Her pain was only bearable because of the bottles of medications she took..handfuls every day. But she was never without pain. Never.
What was wrong with her? She kept asking doctors…but they were afraid to admit they had no ideas…

And she was depressed. She’d struggled with depression all her life…certainly since she was 5. But it wasn’t formally diagnosed till she was 12. Medications seemed to make absolutely no difference. And after years, she was done. She. Just. Stopped.
Enough was enough.
Over the course of 6-8 months, Emma’s parents began to notice a troubling change. She was becoming quieter and disconnected. More passive. Their opinionated and confident daughter just started withdrawing over time until she was no longer present. Disengaged. As if behind a veil… Until at 17, she said very little. Her eyes were vacant.
As their alarm grew, they tried to find things to help bring her out of herself. They offered riding lessons at a nearby stable. She complied, but without engaging. Just passively going through the motions. Then, she began to make excuses to avoid going at all.
Burying herself in streaming…Emma rarely left her room.
Hope from an Unexpected Source
Finally, in desperation, her parents started asking around to try to get ideas to help her. When her mom mentioned to a friend at the gym what she was seeing in her daughter, her friend’s face seemed to lock in.

“I think I may know what you’re going through with your daughter. My niece seemed to sink into a state like you’re describing, and my sister found out about a program offered by a remarkable psychiatrist in the area. After a few months in this program, my niece has come alive again. She is literally glowing with health, and has re-entered her life. She’s got her confidence back. It’s hard to describe, but my sister cried when she told me about it.
“I thought it was just adolescence…you know how at this age kids can become withdrawn and sullen. But, apparently, that’s not just adolescence…per se…it’s a condition that can be treated. It was like she needed to be defended against some autoimmune conditions or something. Let me give you the name of the doctor and her program. You can look into it and see what you think.”
Emma’s mom took the slip of paper and zipped it into a pocket in her purse for safe keeping.
Once home, she looked up the doctor, and her program – Touchpoints180™ – to see if she thought it might help.
Touchpoints180™
The first page she saw seemed to signal a new kind of hope unlike any she’d seen before on a doctor’s webpage. Instantly, she could see there was something different about this practice. The text she read indicated some new approach and seemed to promise new and better outcomes than most people could expect.
So she looked deeper. There were videos – and she watched a couple. There were testimonials that exceeded the standard reviews she was accustomed to. Instead of ratings for the ease of an appointment, or the length of time in the waiting room, these reviews reported life changing results. Gratitude. Transformation.
She talked to her husband on his lunch break, and they agreed they needed to make the call. The website called it a Discover Call. Again, this is not the typical doctor’s office.
The First Meeting
She did make the call, and after listening to another video, she made an appointment for the next day. When Emma got home from school, she told her about it, and they agreed it was worthwhile to miss school for this appointment.

The first appointment involved an in-depth metabolic evaluation, followed by discussion about the need for lab work, along with a description of the Touchpoints180™ program. The doctor explained there were reasons for what she was seeing in Emma, and the treatment would involve helping Emma heal from her cells out. She assured Emma that she was going to start feeling all kinds of better, if she would trust the program, and cooperate with the gentle but healing interventions.
She said Touchpoints180™ is based on an educational empowerment curriculum and individualized pathways we create for each person we work with so that you can reach your personal health goals and mental health goals. This way, you have the knowledge and the tools to create your own optimal brain and body health. She said they help you target your own symptoms with effective interventions that can do that.
“To start, Emma, give us 3 months, to see if you can tell a difference. Can you do that?”
Emma’s eyes looked hopeful but skeptical. She nodded. “Yes, I can do that much.”
What Was She Getting Herself Into?
The doctor explained that the world we live in has incorporated a chaotic invasion of elements that pose stress on the psyche as well as the very cells in her body. She talked about the Pillars of Health, metabolism, brain/mind vibrancy, gut health, sleep, stress resilience, movement, social connection, and purpose. Most people are unaware that overlooking these areas is damaging in so many ways.
She said that they will customize a plan to address all these factors to repair her body at the cell level, so her cells can do what they are built to do.
“Basically, we need to work together to defend you against autoimmune conditions. By doing that, Emma, your body can heal.”
It’s Science, After All
It all sounded almost too good to be true, but the science she explained made more sense than anything she’d heard before. It ignited a tiny flicker of hope. Emma wanted to see if there was anything to it.

Emma and her mom learned things about nutrition they’d never known. They saw how toxic sugar was to her mind and body. So Emma’s mom helped her family change over from depending on glucose for energy, to training their bodies to thrive on ketones.
The Kitchen is the Laboratory
They learned about the vital nutrients in various foods, and why it was important to eat plenty of fat for her body to convert to ketones, and plenty of low carb vegetables to supply vitamins and minerals her body and brain need to function at their best.
They also learned about other factors, and the new regimen to prepare for sleep really seemed to work. Within the week, Emma reported she was sleeping much more deeply. Emma woke up each morning feeling rested…even restored. She and her mom were learning about all the processes that happened in her body while she slept deeply…and how important they were.
She learned about sunlight, and how it triggers important processes in her body to help her heal. And she learned to limit her screen time, for the same reason. She also participated in the nature walks other practice members enjoyed regularly. And she got to know new friends there, and the doctor, too, because she was walking right along with them. All these things worked together to defend her against autoimmune conditions.

After a week… Emma’s mom noticed tiny changes in her. She saw her demeanor changing…improving… Then, after a month, those changes were becoming more pronounced. By the time they’d been with Touchpoints180™ 3 months, light had returned to Emma’s eyes. Hopeful and upbeat, she was talking again at the dinner table. She told her mom she didn’t want to stop. She could feel herself waking up, sort of coming alive… and she was. Emma’s parents couldn’t get over it.
Her Mind… Her Body… Even Her Pain Improved
Her pain had become much milder, and her blood sugars were far less erratic already. She was enjoying more stability in her blood sugars and her insulin needs were reduced. As a result, her next A1C was also reduced. What’s more, the migraines were coming far less often. This was unthinkable! What a surprise!
She learned that Touchpoints180™ was designed to reduce inflammation through her diet as well as all the other things she was doing in the program. By this point, Emma realized that the whole program was designed just for her, for her metabolic and psychiatric needs. And each part of it, each touchpoint, played an important role in her healing. She really was learning how to defend herself against autoimmune conditions.
This was no joke. She was healing every day. She could feel it. Her mind had become clear, her thinking was so much more productive, her decisions easier. She couldn’t have imagined this in advance, but she was really getting remarkably better already.

Her mood was so much lighter. She could tell she still had a ways to go, which was why she wanted to continue in the program. But she had had no idea how to get to where she was now, and she felt grateful for the improvement – grateful for Touchpoints180™.
And she had energy. In her body and in her mind. Energy to deal with people’s stuff, energy to face classmates and teachers, energy to face her homework. She wasn’t drowning anymore. And it suddenly dawned on her she hadn’t been sick even once in the last two months. So much was changing. So much was getting better.
She also hadn’t had a migraine in weeks. What on earth? Her whole body was changing.
Defending Herself Against Autoimmune Conditions
As time passed, she started noticing the pain in her knees seemed to have calmed way down. And her neck and shoulders…well, the gripping pain there was milder. Not nearly as intense as it had been.
Her mom mentioned in passing that by following Touchpoints180™ the arthritis in her own hands seemed to be subsiding. And her brain fog was gone. She was thinking clearly without overwhelm… better than she had in so many years.

Both mother and daughter saw themselves transforming. And their whole family was thriving from their own participation, too. But Emma’s parents were watching a miracle in their daughter. There was no better way to put it. By helping her to make a handful of specific, targeted changes, they were watching her come back to life. They could only imagine how she would bloom as she continued on this path.
